Pet Food and Supply Product Labels That Pop

Whether you make pet treats, grooming accessories, pet toys or bedding, you’ll want labels that bring your brand to life and inspire repeat purchases. Pet product labels must balance personality and pizzazz with all the information required to sell your product.

Pet Food Labels: What You Need on Them

Pet food labels are perhaps the most highly regulated out of all pet products. Requirements vary depending on your business, type of product and where your product is sold. In general, most pet food labels contain some or all of the following:
  1. Your brand name and/or logo. You’ll want this to stand out the most, and there are a variety of things your label vendor can do to help make this happen. Check that you are using a unique brand name that is not misleading, already trademarked or registered by another brand.
  2. Your company name, address and/or phone number
  3. Nutritional adequacy statement (pet life stage, type of meal, etc.) and nutrition facts (serving size, calories, nutrients, vitamins and minerals)
  4. Ingredient list (unless your product is truly single-ingredient)
  1. Net weight and/or quantity of product in the package
  2. Guaranteed analysis
  3. Directions on how to feed your pet
  4. UPC (Universal Product Code), or barcode, to help track inventory

For more information, consult FDA guidelines on pet food labels and be sure you’re complying with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), which requires truthful labeling. Look into state requirements based on the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) too. These steps will help limit the potential for costly revisions and reprints down the road.

Pet Food and Supplies: Common Label Styles and Materials

There are many different ways to label food and supplies for pets, which means you have lots of options. Whether your label goes on a can, tub, bottle, bag, tag or other form of packaging will make a difference in your overall design options and costs. If you’re marketing your brand to a younger crowd, know that the attractiveness of your packaging matters. Photo-worthy designs that look premium, artisanal and healthy for pets tend to attract more attention. Think minimal layouts, fewer words, coated paper, glossy plastics and strategic use of color. Common label methods include: Promotional Labels, Instant Redeemable Coupons, and High-Gloss, Laminated Labels. Above all, you’ll want clear, crisp printing that adheres to required materials and adhesives as well as government regulations. A good label vendor will explore your options with you and discuss the best ways to address your top concerns, from color matching and quality control to accommodating large amounts of information.

Do Your Pet Food Labels Need to Be Produced in a GMP Facility?

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) are a standard of manufacturing practices for both human and veterinary drugs, as well as food products. If your label will come into direct contact with food (such as a preprinted beef jerky pouch or a label you place on an apple), it likely needs to be produced in a GMP-compliant facility. Ask your packaging supplier if they can comply. (Hint: a GMP facility will always have a certificate from a third-party auditor saying the facility is in compliance for a certain period of time.)

Are Your Labels Scalable from Startup to High Volume?

Wherever you are in your business, whether you need 100 labels or 1 million labels, choose a vendor who can get to know your brand and grow with you. The long-term relationship can really pay off in the long run. Signs your vendor is prepared to grow with your brand include state-of-the-art facilities, digital printing capabilities, staff expertise and attention to detail. Start the conversation now so you won’t need to have a new one later.
